Laurence Des Cars: The First Woman At The Head Of The Louvres

Even if many hoped for the renewal of the president-director of the Louvre Museum, Jean-Luc Martinez was decided otherwise. Laurence des Cars, currently President of the Orsay and Orangerie museums, has been appointed to succeed him.

She is the first woman to have obtained this position since the museum’s opening. For this reason, it seems appropriate to highlight the system for appointing the President of the Louvre, Laurence des Cars‘ career path, and her plans for this public institution.

1. The President-director of the Louvre

Created in 1793, the Musée du Louvre did not have a director until 1968. André Parrot, the former President, had limited powers of action. It was not until 1992 that the museum became a public administrative institution with a cultural vocation (EPAC), giving more freedom to the President, who then became president-director.

The President of the Republic appoints the president-director of the Louvre for a five-year term. They may be reappointed twice for three years each time. Until 1993, presidents had to be chosen from among the curators of national museums. Since then, the choice can be made from any recognized scientific personality, even if, for the moment, only heritage curators have been called to the directorate. Moreover, Laurence des Cars has already held the position of a museum curator.

2. The career of Laurence des Cars

Laurence des Cars is an internationally recognized curator. She has specialized in 19th and 20th-century art. She is a graduate of the University of Paris IV, the École du Louvre, and the Institut National du Patrimoine.

Laurence des Cars was first appointed curator at the Musée d’Orsay in 1994, where she remained until 2007. During this period, she organized various exhibitions with international partners. In 2007, Laurence des Cars were appointed scientific director of the Agence France Muséums. She also managed the operation of the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Laurence des Cars was also appointed President of the Musée d’Orangerie in 2014, then the Musée d’Orsay in 2017. She will continue to serve as President of both museums until September, when she will officially assume the president-director of the Louvre.

3. Laurence des Cars’ Projects

The candidates running for the presidency of the Louvre have each presented their plans for the museum’s development. However, Laurence des Cars’ plan was more appealing to the Minister of Culture and the President of the Republic. In particular, it emphasizes youth and modernizing the museum.

As Laurence des Cars says so well, “the Louvre is the home of all the arts and artists. Moreover, it welcomes more than 10 million visitors in one year, making it the most important museum in the world.

Laurence des Cars intends to make this museum even more attractive to people of all ages. According to her, the museum is an “echo chamber”. Thus, it is important to make the past resonate with the present. This talented and dynamic woman has carried out significant projects in her career.

The attendance at the Orangerie and Orsay museums, which has increased significantly since she became director, is proof of this. She is also the initiator of the “Orsay Grand Ouvert” project, which involves the extension and improvement of this museum. The opening of the new spaces is planned for 2024.

During Laurence des Cars’ tenure, the Musée d’Orsay received the most significant number of works, donations from several people. In short, judging by des Cars’ exceptional career, her appointment as president-director of the Louvre is entirely justified. Her dynamism and talent make her the most appropriate person to hold this position.

The Perfect Hobby: Watching Movies

As someone who did a degree in English with a minor in Queer and Film studies, I can tell you that I’ve watched my fair share of movies in my life, and I’m a self-proclaimed movie buff and watch movies like it’s nobody’s business. These past two years, with the on and off lockdowns and the pandemic raging on, I watched more movies than I can count, some better than others and others which were bottom of the barrel bad, He’s All That and The Kissing Booth series am talking about you.

These are the things that movies have taught me, and studies conducted on human behavior have shown how our worldview and how we see things are shaped by cinema because cinema gives us a glimpse of the world we live in.

You learn History

Films can shape how we view the world and treat others, cinema plays a great role in how we view the world we inhabit, and by watching more diverse movies, we learn to become more compassionate. Movies do their fair share to tell us the history of marginalized voices and the history of people that have been silenced and erased from history books. I have learned so much about queer history through queer movies like 120 BPM or Pride; one of my favorite quotes from pride is:

“Now, there is a long and honorable tradition in the gay community and it has stood us in good stead for a very long time. When somebody calls you a name… You take it and you own it!”

Movies like these teach us the history of those who came before us, and for the gay community, this is monumental because we have been erased and shunned to the sidelines for the majority of history. This quote is a testimony of the resistance of our community and how we reclaimed terms that were used against us as badges of honors. As my grandma used to tell me, it’s not what you’re called but what you respond to that matters.

They give you the feels.

your name engraved herein1

We all know the saying laughter is the best medicine by now, but so is crying, and movies allow us to express all these emotions; we become so emotionally invested with the characters that we feel their hurt and cry when they cry. Research carried out by Oxford University suggests that good movies positively affect our brains, boost up endorphins, and increase pain tolerance will ultimately make you feel better. If you want to have a cry feast, you ought to watch The Notebook, Marriage story, or my current favorite movie, Your Name Engraved Herein. One of the most heartbreaking quotes from this movie is:

So you can like girls, but I can’t like boys?

Is your love bigger than the love I give?

Tell me. What’s the difference between your love and mine? Tell me the difference!”

It’s better to go through this movie blind because it will destroy you, stream it now on Netflix. Films can be a safe space for us and can express things that we can’t express ourselves and can be a sort of escapism while at the same time being representative of our life experiences.

They drive social change.

As argued earlier, films shape how we view the world and interact with others; they also shape our way of thinking and inspire social change. It teaches us empathy, raises politically charged questions and makes us experience things that we would otherwise not understand or go through. Movies make us see the world through the lens of another, making us more comprehensive of other people’s journeys and struggles.

“You want change without sacrifice, you want peace without struggle. The World Doesn’t work that way” – Allegiant.

This can be anything from horror movies like Get Out, to superhero movies like Black Panther and Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, to films inspired from real life like Bombshell and Twelve Years of Slaves; these movies show us a more bleak and realistic picture of the world and all the atrocities minorities have to endure in this white heteronormative patriarchal world we live in.

Cinema drives social changes and makes us more aware of what’s happening globally, from the gay rights movement to the civil rights movement to Black Lives Matter to Timesup. Cinema was created for entertainment but is now a vehicle for social change.

What’s My Voice Type? The Ultimate Guide to Defining Your Voice

To understand your type of voice well, you must first know the concept of the vocal register. This article explains what the five vocal registers of the human voice are and how they work. Knowing your voice is the first step to learning! Let’s see some basic definitions and know each record in-depth: vocal fry, chest voice, middle voice, head voice, and voice whistle. One of the things that a singing teacher must do in the first class is to determine the register or vocal range of the vocal student, to adapt the scales of the exercises to their possibilities, and to be able to transport the tonalities of the songs to work at the convenience of the student’s voice. But range by itself does not allow us to classify a voice. It’s not that easy. There are five ways in which the voice, and in particular the speech system, produces sound, or in other words: The five-voice registers. And we must understand them to understand our voice. We are talking about registers, but we could refer to five vocal techniques; Five ways vocal folds are positioned and vibrated, each with different muscle actions and different physical sensations.

Vocal Fry

How to Improve Your Singing Voice (Helpful Tips) - Music Grotto

The vowel fry is the lowest of the registers, created by a closure of the vocal folds with their relaxed muscle tissue, which allows air to bubble as it passes through them, at shallow frequency, creating a rattle-like sound, or the squeak of a rusted hinge. Traditionally it is a very little used registry; however, nowadays, it is ubiquitous to hear it in the attack. Mainly this register will serve to reach notes more deficient than those of our spoken voice. But additionally, in this method, we are going to use this technique to learn to manage the air optimally and improve the quality of the lower notes of our chest voice.

Chest Voice

Adam Lambert: Music execs are still 'scared' of gay men singing about male lovers

The chest voice is the part of the voice whose vibration we can clearly feel in the chest, especially in the sternum and ribs. Here, the [TA] muscle is contracted to produce the lowest notes, causing them to vibrate at a lower frequency. The chest voice is the one most used by male voices in speech.

Middle Voice

The highest part of the normal voice is the middle voice. A well-trained singer can stretch and narrow their vocal folds while maintaining a balanced timbre, the register connected, and without effort. They have the necessary coordination for continuous adjustments between the air pressure and the tension of the vocal folds. Furthermore, this voice deserves to be classified separately by the apparent sensation of resonance in the mask, that is to say, in the resonators of the face. The middle voice is the one most used by high-voiced women and children when speaking.

Head Voice

This register is above the middle voice. Both men and women use this registry. Its main characteristic is the lower amount of low harmonics, which gives it a more piping sound. Only the edge of the vocal folds vibrates in the head voice. The vocalis muscle, the thyroarytenoid muscle, and the thyroarytenoid ligament on which they extend remain relaxed and static. While in the middle voice and chest, all the tissue of the folds is involved: mucosa, muscle, and ligament. This difference in mass means that the lead vocalist can withstand less air pressure and, therefore, prevents you from singing with the same power and that you lose quality and richness as you go down to the lowest notes of this register.

Hissing Voice

Also called the voice of tiple, flageolet, or whistle voice, it is the highest register of the human voice. It is named for the resemblance it has to the high notes of a flute. Most women and children can use this register with ease, and it is possible to train it with proper technique in the voice of some men. It is above high C (C6) and can go up to two octaves above (C8). The physiology of this technique is the least understood of the vocal registers. It isn’t easy to videotape it using laryngoscopy as the epiglottis is closed over the larynx to reduce the larynx’s resonance chamber volume. It is known that when working in this register, only the edge of the vocal folds vibrates. And also, only the front portion of them does. That facilitates the production of high tones.

Binge-worthy: The Vampire Diaries.

The Vampire Diaries is one of the best decisions of my life (okay, I may be overreacting). I love TVD, if you cannot say already. If you are an adult, you may ask yourself why you want to indulge in a ‘teenage-like TV show. Let me explain to you why and I can guarantee you that you will want to binge-watch the show after reading this article.

Like every show, The Vampire Diaries has its bottom point, where you may feel bored, but you will be so attached to the character that you won’t feel the boredom of some episodes.

The Characters

The Characters.

If you are like me and you love complicated characters, you have found your salvation. The show revolves around Elena, Stefan and Damon. I will make sure not to spoil you through my analysis, but this is a love triangle thing; long story short.

So you know the drill, a lot of crying, screaming and jealousy. The film is a journey of every these characters and other characters linked to them. Their conflicting nature, the level of toxicity and the ever-changing personalities of the characters will excite you.

Damon is seen as the ‘bad-boy’ since the pilot, as the vampires abstain from killing. Damon is always doing a carnage to demonstrate his level of viciousness.

One of the most compelling elements of this show is romance. If you are a hopeless romantic, I got you. Every character has a partner at one time or another. While our main concern remains the love triangle, there are other romantic partnerships that you will be fond of.

You will be heartbroken when your favourite characters will fall out of love and even form a couple in your head. It will demonstrate your implication into the TV show. I can recall every question I was asking myself when I started watching the show, and you will have tons … between love at sight and fights, you will be served.

The forever-loved Ian Somerhalder alias Damon Salvatore.

Damon Salvatore.

Yes, Ian Somerhalder is a reason to watch The Vampire Diaries. Let set the point straight, Damon was written as the villain, but the creators had to rethink the character as TVD fans could not help but love him.

The creators even wrote in things that should be unforgivable to be able to bring back Damon as the hated character, but they loved him even more (nice try, though). There is a time where Damon is known as the lovable villain, just to inform you that you will love him.

Family is also a prominent theme in TVD. There are two main families; the Salvatore and the Originals. We can see that these two families are both very dysfunctional. Episode four of the first season is called ‘Family Ties’, where we see the sibling rivalry between the Salvatore brothers. I want to tell you more about how conflictual the relationship can get in these families, but this will only spoil the show.

You should know that you will be surprised during the show. Things won’t turn up how you expect, there is a lot of twists, and I can tell that this will get on your nerves, but this is what keeps the show going and make it even more interesting.

Compare to other shows where you can figure out the end, but analysing the characters, TVD will leave you shaken up (even hating the creators at the time), but I guess that’s how they kept a high audience during eight seasons.

The Vampire Diaries is trending again, and we love it. I advise you to watch what you won’t regret (or you will). Would you please let us know in the comments if you are willing to go through 8 seasons of this TV show?
